SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- With the sharp shooting of Malina Hood and her game-high 25 points, the University of San Diego women's basketball team cruised its way to 74-55 win over Pepperdine University Thursday evening in a West Coast Conference game at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
With the win, the Toreros improve to 17-2 overall, remain in a two-way tie for first place at 7-1 in league play, have matched the best start in program history, and are currently riding a five-game winning streak. With the loss, the Waves fall to 5-14 overall, move to 1-7 in the WCC, and have lost their sixth consecutive contest.
Hood led all players with her 25 points on 10-of-16 shooting from the field, while also pulling down four rebounds and recording three steals. Maya Hood was the second of three Toreros in double figures with 16 points on 6-of-7 shooting, while pulling down seven boards, and Sydney Williams chipped in with 13 points on 6-of-11 shooting. Both Katherine Hamilton and Cori Woodward led the team with five assists each.
As a team, USD shot 53.6% from the field, while holding the Waves to 39.6% shooting. USD was out rebounded 35-30, and the Toreros committed 13 turnovers, while Pepperdine had 16.
For the Waves, Erica Ogwumike led the way with 17 points on 6-of-16 shooting from the field, and she had seven boards. The only other Pepperdine player in double figures was Devin Stanback, who scored 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field.
San Diego will return to action on Saturday, as they remain at home to host Loyola Marymount in a 2 p.m. WCC game inside the friendly confines of the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
