SAN DIEGO, Calif, - The University of San Diego Swim Team hosted the UC San Diego Tritons for a dual meet on Saturday at the Sports Center Swimming Pool. UCSD topped the Toreros 210-88.
The day started with the recognition of Torero seniors Jackie Taylor, Sammi Cohn, Stephanie Jones, Sarah Reierson, Morgan Scarth and Paige Sellers. In their final meet at the USD pool they were honored for their great accomplishments in the pool and in the classroom.
Taylor and Reierson were among the first Toreros in the pool as they teamed up with Bri Jurries and Mackenna Briggs to earn second place (1:47.54) in the meets first race, the 200-medley relay. Briggs would finish third (10:34.25) in the next event, the 1000-free, just behind Liza Kuznetsova (10:29.39) who took second. Kuznetsova and Briggs both had season-best times in the 1000 free.
Taylor notched a time of 1:53.66 in the 200-free edging out UCSD's Natalie Tang (1:53.72) to earn one of the Toreros two first-place finishes on the day. The San Ramon, Calif. native took fourth in the 50-free (25.20) and also helped secure a second place finish in the 400-free relay (3:36.86) with Reierson, Jones and Danielle Deiparine.
Reierson continued to help the Toreros with two excellent performances in the backstroke events. In the 100-back she posted a 59.53, good enough for second place, just ahead of teammate Missy Beall (1:02.67). In the 200, Reierson also claimed second place with a 2:09.86. Scarth also added points in the 200-back with her fifth place finish (2:12.52).
Freshman Danielle Taylor earned the Toreros other top finish with a 2:05.34 in the 200-fly. M.K. Clancy also placed in the 200-fly with a 2:07.88 good enough for third. Danielle came in second (52.29) in the 100-free while Jones came in fifth at 55.86.
In the 200-breast USD swimmers Deiparine and Jurries came in third and fifth respectively. The Toreros placed second through fourth in the 500-free as Briggs, Kuznetsova and Gwen Walter finished behind the Tritons' Stephanie Sin. Briggs earned a second place finish in the 200-IM and Cohn finished fifth in the day's final individual race.
UCSD hosted the diving portion of the competition where Lexi Held posted a 208.51 in 1-meter diving and added a 195.15 in 3-meter diving.
The team will be back in the pool on Wednesday, February 17, in Los Angeles for the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation swim and dive championships.
