SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The USD swim team fell to North Texas 61-48 Saturday afternoon at the USD Sportscenter Pool. Freshman Mackenna Briggs paced the Toreros by taking first place in the 500 free and 400 IM with career-best times.
This unique meet featured four championship style 50-yard events along with a 400 medley relay, 500 free, 400 IM, and 200 freestyle. The Toreros entered the four 50 finals down just 38-36, but the Mean Green took first in three of the final four events to claim first place.
The meet began with the 400 medley relay, which USD took second place in. Sarah Reierson, Bri Jurries, Danielle Taylor, and Jackie Taylor finished in 3:57.40 to earn the Toreros' four points.
In the next event, the 500 free, USD grabbed first and second place. Briggs set the pace with a career-best time of 5:08.67, and Gwen Walter finished in 5:11.13.
After the prelims for the four 50 yard events, Briggs secured her second first place finish. She finished the 400 IM with a career-best time of 4:34.14. Another freshman, MK Clancy, finished in third with a time of 4:38.73. Morgan Scarth also earned points for USD with a time of 4:43.97, good for fourth place.
In the 200 free, senior captain Jackie Taylor finished in second with a time of 1:53.66. Danielle Deiparine came in fourth place with a time of 1:57.80.
In the 50 yard shootout, the top two swimmers from each team competed. First was the 50 butterfly, which Danielle Taylor captured first place in with a time of 25.42, edging the closest competition by nearly a whole second. MK Clancy took fourth with a time of 26.48, just .06 seconds out of third place.
In the 50 backstroke, USD took third (Sarah Reierson; 27.76) and fourth (Missy Beall; 28.31). In the 50 breast, Bri Jurries grabbed second place with a time of 30.60. Sammi Cohn finished in fourth with a time of 32.13.
In the final event, the 50 free, Jackie Taylor was just 0.1 seconds out of first place. She finished in 24.75 and Stephanie Jones came in fourth with a time of 25.56.
The Toreros will host the annual Beach Cup next Friday and Saturday. They will compete against Fresno State, LMU, and Pepperdine.
