PROVO, Utah â€" The fifth-ranked University of San Diego women's volleyball team was stunned by No. 16 BYU, 3-0, Friday evening in a West Coast Conference match at the Smith Fieldhouse.
With the 16-25, 22-25, 25-27 loss, the Toreros fall to 19-3 overall, move to 10-1 in the WCC, and saw their season-high 18-match winning streak come to an end. USD still remains in sole possession of first place in the WCC standings, despite the loss. With the win, the Cougars improve to 20-3 overall, and move to 9-2 in the WCC.
Offensively for the Toreros, both Lisa Kramer and Kaity Edwards led the way with 11 kills apiece. Kramer hit .261 for the match, while Edwards hit .450 from the floor. Hunter Jennings led the USD defense with 11 digs, while Kristen Gengenbacher recorded 24 assists and Anna Newsome had 19 assists.
As a team, USD hit for a .252 clip, while BYU hit .369. USD recorded 46 kills to BYU's 51, and the Cougars out dug the Toreros, 43-36.
For the Cougars, Amy Boswell led the way, as she had 14 kills, while hitting .500, and she had four blocks. The only other BYU player in double digit kills was McKenna Miller, who had 13 kills, and hit .290. Mary Lake recorded a match-high 16 digs, while Lyndie Haddock led the team with 40 assists.
San Diego will return to action on Thursday, as they travel to Moraga, Calif. to take on the Saint Mary's College Gaels at 7 p.m.
