MALIBU, Calif. - Three Toreros recorded double-digit kills, but it wasn't enough, as the 11th-ranked University of San Diego women's volleyball team was upset by Pepperdine University, 3-1, in the regular-season finale Tuesday evening at the Firerstone Fieldhouse.
With the loss, the Toreros finish the regular-season with a 24-5 overall record, and finish in second place in the WCC with a 15-3 record. San Diego will learn where and when they will be playing in the NCAA Tournament on Sunday evening at 6 p.m., as the NCAA Tournament selection show will air live on ESPNU. With the win, the Waves finished the season with a 13-17 overall record and a 7-11 mark in the WCC.
Lisa Kramer led the Toreros offense with 16 kills, and added in two digs. Thana Fayad had a double-double with 10 kills and 11 digs, while Lauren Schad recorded 10 kills as well. Both Kristen Gengenbacher and Anna Newsome posted double-doubles with each recoding 28 assists, and Newsome had 14 digs and Gengenbacher had 13 digs. Hunter Jennings paced the defense with 20 digs.
As a team, USD hit for a .198 clip, while Pepperdine hit .245. The Toreros recorded 74 digs, to Pepperdine's 63, and USD recorded 64 kills, while Pepperdine had 57. USD was out blocked 15-5.
For the Waves, Jasmine Gross and Hannah Frohling led the way with 12 kills each, and Gaby Palmer added in 11 more kills. Heidi Dyer led the team with 27 assists, while Hana Lishman led the defense with 19 digs.
