MORAGA, Calif. - Behind a season-high 14 kills from junior opposite Jayden Kennedy, the seventh-ranked University of San Diego women's volleyball team rolled to a 3-0 win over Saint Mary's College Thursday evening in a West Coast Conference match.
With the 25-15, 25-23, 25-18 win, the Toreros improve to 20-3 overall, and move to 11-1 in the WCC. With the loss, the Gaels fall to 10-14 overall, and fall to 5-8 in the WCC.
Kennedy led all players with her 14 kills on 34 swings, while also recording a pair of digs. Lauren Schad was the only other Torero in double-digit kills, as she had 13 on 18 swings, to hit for a .611 clip. Kristen Gengenbacher led the team with 21 assists, while Anna Newsome added in 18 more assists. Hunter Jennings led the defense with 18 digs, running her double-digit dig streak up to seven.
As a team, USD hit for a .327 clip, while SMC hit .170. The Toreros recorded 49 kills, to the Gaels' 32, and recorded 47 digs, to SMC's 33.
For the Gaels, Lindsey Knutson led the offense with nine kills, while Alexis Salmons added in eight more kills. Mary Hernandez recorded 27 assists, and just missed a double-double with nine digs. The Gaels also combined for 12.0 total blocks on the evening.
San Diego will return to action on Saturday, as they head over to Stockton for a 12 p.m. WCC match.
