LAKE ELSINORE, Calif. â€" The University of San Diego baseball team (1-3) picked up its first win of the season, with a thrilling 9-6 win over crosstown rival San Diego State (1-4) Thursday evening in a non-conference game at The Diamond, home of the Lake Elsinore Storm.
The Toreros wasted no time in scoring, as they pushed across one run in the first inning on a Riley Adams RBI single, which scored Bryson Brigman, who had singled, to give USD the 1-0 lead.
USD then broke things open in the second, as they managed to score four runs on two hits. Ryan Kirby led off the frame by reaching on a fielding error by the SDSU second baseman. A Kevin Collard walk moved Kirby to second with one out. Connor Jauch then moved both runners up a base on a sacrifice bunt, and Daniel Gardner hit a 2-run single to right field to push across the first two runs of the frame. Brhet Bewley then drove in Gardner with a triple down the right field line. After an Aztec pitching change, Brigman reached on an error, which also allowed Bewley to score from third, to give USD a 5-0 lead.
USD then tacked on another run in the top of the fifth, but SDSU responded with two runs in the fifth, one in the sixth, and two more in the bottom of the seventh to cut the lead down to one at 6-5.
San Diego then got three insurance runs across in the top of the ninth on an Adams RBI single, and an Kirby 2-run double to give USD a 9-5 lead.
The Aztecs then managed to load the bases with no outs in the bottom of the ninth, but only could push across one run, to leave the game at the final of 9-6.
Offensively for the Toreros, Adams had a good day, going 3-for-5 with a one RBI, while Brigman also went 3-for-5 with a double and two runs scored. Kirby went 2-for-5 with a double and two RBI, while Hunter Mercado-Hood went 2-for-3 with two RBI.
Drew Jacobs (1-1) picked up the win on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed one run on one hit in 1.1 innings of work. Jonathan Teaney picked up his first save, as he allowed no runs on no hits in 1.0 innings of work. Mike Diamond (0-1) was saddled with the loss for the Aztecs, as he allowed five runs on four hits in 1.2 innings of work.
The Toreros will return to action on Friday, as they begin play in the Tony Gwyn Classic, hosting Nebraska in a 6 p.m. game inside he friendly confines of Fowler Park.
