SAN DIEGO, Calif. â€" The University of San Diego baseball team (4-4) rallied to score four runs in the top of the ninth to come-from-behind and claim a thrilling 4-2 win over cross-town rival San Diego State University (1-8) Tuesday evening in a non-conference game at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
With the Toreros trailing 2-0, and only registering one hit headed into the top of the ninth, USD didn't panic, as they held true to head coach Rich Hill's motto of seven, eight, nine is Torero time. The Toreros came up with four runs on four hits to claim the win.
Bryson Brigman got things started, as he led off the frame with a single off the glove of the SDSU third baseman. Riley Adams then stepped to the plate and fought off several pitches, before lacing a run-scoring double down the left field line to cut the lead in half with no outs. Ryan Kirby then laced a double down the left field line to score Adams and even the score up at 2-all. San Diego wasn't done, as after Kirby moved to third on a passed ball, the SDSU infield was in, and Jerod Smith hit a bloop single into right field, which scored Kirby from third to give USD the lead. Smith moved to second on a ground out, and then James Bonds reached on an error by the SDSU first baseman. On the same play, Smith never stopped running, as he rounded third and slid into home plate feet first, just beating the tag to give USD a 4-2 lead.
SDSU was then retired in order in the bottom of the ninth by Jonathan Teaney, as he picked up his first win of the season. Teaney (1-0) allowed no runs on one hit in 2.0 innings of work. SDSU's Jacob Erickson (0-2) was saddled with the loss for the Aztecs, as he allowed two runs on two hits in 0.1 innings of work.
The Aztecs managed to get on the scoreboard first, as in the bottom of the fourth they scored on a Spencer Thorton sacrifice fly, which scored Chase Calabuig, who had singled, to give the home team a 1-0 lead. SDSU then double its lead in the fifth with one more run, setting up the thrilling USD rally.
Offensively for the Toreros, Adams led the way, as he went 1-for-2 with a double, one RBI and had a pair of walks.
The Toreros will return to action on Friday, as they return to the friendly confines of Fowler Park to take on No. 3 Oregon State. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
