March 12, 2016 Box Score
WACO, Texas â€" Junior left handed pitcher Troy Conyers was dominating on the mound, and the Toreros offense erupted for 15 hits, to help propel the University of San Diego baseball team to a thrilling 10-1 win over New Mexico State University Saturday afternoon in a non-conference game at Baylor Ballpark.
With the win, the Toreros improve to 8-7 overall, complete a two-game sweep of the Aggies, and have now won three consecutive games, and four of the last five. With the loss, the Aggies fall to 9-8 overall.
Conyers had his best outing of the season, as he allowed just one run, while scattering three hits over his longest outing of the season, 7.0 innings. Conyers took a no-hitter into the fifth, until Austin Botello broke it up with a single to right field. Conyers never fell off his dominance, as he just allowed two more hits and one run over the remaining two innings of work, while also striking out seven total batters.
San Diego got on the scoreboard first, as in the top of the third inning, they managed to score two runs on three hits. Jerod Smith got things started with a single up the middle, and he moved to second on a Ryan Kirby single through the right side. Hunter Mercado-Hood was then hit by a pitch to load the bases with two outs. Conner Jauch then delivered a 2-run single to left field, which gave USD the 2-0 edge.
After both teams scored one run in the fifth, it was the top of the sixth that broke things open for the Toreros, as they scored four runs on four hits. Jeff Houghtby led off the frame being hit by a pitch, and two batters later, Riley Adams drew a walk to move Houghtby to second. After Ryan Kirby singled to load the based, the Aggies made a pitching change. This change didn't slow USD down, as a Brhet Bewley single scored the first two runs of the frame, and moved Kirby to third. Mercado-Hood then reached on an error by the second baseman, which scored Kirby, and moved Bewley to third. Jauch then capped the scoring for the inning with an infield RBI single to give USD a 6-1 lead.
USD never looked back, as they went on to score one run in the seventh and two more in the ninth to put the game at its final of 10-1.
Offensively for the Toreros, Smith led the way, as he went 4-for-6 with two doubles and two runs scored. Jauch also had a great day, as he went 3-for-4 with a double and five RBI. Adams, and Kirby also recorded multiple hits on the afternoon.
NMSU's Steven Butts (2-2) was saddled with the loss, as he allowed six runs on 10 hits in 5.1 innings of work.
