Final Stats

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego baseball team fought hard, but came up short in a 5-2 loss to No. 3 Oregon State University Saturday evening in a non-conference game at Fowler Park.

The Toreros (4-6) got on the scoreboard first, as in the first inning they pushed across one run on one hit. Jeff Houghtby got things stared with a lead-off walk. He then moved to second on a wild pitch, and two batters later, Riley Adams singled up the middle, which scored Houghtby, to give USD the early 1-0 lead.

Oregon State (10-1) then evened up the score in the top of the third inning, as they scored one run on two hits. The OSU run came on Nick Madrigal RBI double, which scored Cadyn Greiner, who had doubled, to move the score to 1-1.

The Beavers then went on to score one run in the fourth and sixth innings to take a 3-1 lead. USD responded in the bottom of the sixth by scoring one run on an Adams solo home run to left field, moving the score to 3-2.

The Beavers would then score two unanswered runs in the seventh to put the game at its final of 5-2.

Offensively for the Toreros, Adams led the way, as he went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI.

Nick Sprengel (1-2) was saddled with the loss on the mound for the Toreros, despite having a good outing. Sprengel allowed three runs on nine hits, while striking out eight batters in 5.1 innings of work. OSU's Travis Eckert (1-0) picked up the win for the Beavers, as he allowed two runs on three hits in 7.1 innings of work.

The Toreros will return to action on Sunday, as they host William and Mary in a 5 p.m. non-conference game at Fowler Park.
