SAN DIEGO, Calif. â€" The University of San Diego baseball team dropped a 7-2 decision to Loyola Marymount University Friday evening in a West Coast Conference game at Fowler Park.
The Lions (12-14, 4-3 WCC) wasted no time in scoring, as a Sean Watkins solo homerun in the top of the second, gave LMU a 1-0 lead. The Lions then did most of their damage in the top of the third inning, as they scored five runs on five hits, to take a commanding 6-0 lead.
Then with USD (15-13, 3-4 WCC) trailing 7-0 in the bottom of the ninth, USD would finally get on the scoreboard. Back-to-back singles by Daniel Gardner, and Brhet Bewley set the table, and a Kevin Collard stand-up double to left center scored the first run for the Toreros, forcing a pitching change. Two batters later, Jeff Houghtby drew a walk to load the bases. Bryson Brigman then drove in the second run with an RBI single to centerfield, but this is as close as USD would get, leaving the bases loaded and the score at a final of 7-2.
Offensively for the Toreros, Collard led the way, as he went 2-for-4 with one double and one run scored. Bewley also went 2-for-4, while Brigman also recorded multiple hits, going 2-for-5.
Troy Conyers (4-3) was saddled with the loss on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed six runs, five earned, on seven hits in 6.0 innings of work. LMU's J.F. Bundfield (2-2) picked up the win for the Lions, as he allowed two runs on two hits in 8.0 innings of work.
The Toreros will return to action on Saturday, as they resume this three-game series with LMU. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Fowler Park.
