Highlanders Rally Past Toreros

April 19, 2016

Box Score

SAN DIEGO, Calif. â€" The UC Riverside baseball team rallied back to score four unanswered runs to claim a 5-4 non-conference win over the University of San Diego Tuesday evening at Fowler Park.

The Toreros (20-20) got on the scoreboard first, as they managed to score one run with no official at bats in the first inning. Jeff Houghtby led off the frame with a walk, and moved to second on a Bryson Brigman sacrifice bunt. Houghtby then moved to third on a wild pitch, and Riley Adams drove in Houghtby with a sacrifice fly to center. Roman Garcia was then hit by a pitch, and stole second base. Hunter Mercado-Hood then drew a walk, and Garcia advanced to third on a wild pitch. Garcia was then thrown out on a double-steal attempt at home, giving USD a 1-0 lead.

The Highlanders (15-19) then evened the score in the top of the second on a Colby Schultz RBI groundout, which scored Austin Colvin, who had singled, to move the score to 1-1.

San Diego then did most of their scoring damage in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring three runs on four hits. Daniel Gardner got things started with an infield bunt single. Troy Conyers then launched a 2-run homer to right center, to push across the first two runs. Jay Schuyler then doubled to keep things going. Two batters later, Bryson Brigman drove in Schuyler with an RBI single to centerfield, to give USD a 4-1 lead.

UCR then scored one run in the fifth on an Adonis Morrison RBI single, and one run in the seventh on a Vince Fernandez RBI single, pulling to within one at 4-3. Then the Highlanders took advantage of a USD miscue and scored a pair of runs in the ninth, to put the game at its final of 5-3.

Offensively for the Toreros, Brigman had a good game, as he went 2-for-3 with one RBI, while Conyers went 1-for-4 with a home run and two RBI.

Nathan Kuchta (2-1) was saddled with the loss on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed two runs on two hits in 1.0 innings of work. Alex Fagdale (2-0) picked up the win for the Highlander, as he allowed no runs on one hit in 1.0 innings of work. Ryan Lillie picked up his fourth save of the season, as he allowed no runs on no hits in 1.0 innings of work.

San Diego will return to action on Friday, as they resume West Coast Conference play against the University of San Francisco in the Bay Area. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
