SAN DIEGO, Calif. â€" The University of San Diego baseball team picked up a 5-1 win, and evened the series with Loyola Marymount University Saturday evening in a West Coast Conference game at Fowler Park.
The Toreros (16-13, 4-4 WCC) got on the scoreboard first, as in the bottom of the second inning, USD scored one run on three hits. Hunter Mercado-Hood led off the frame with a stand-up double to right centerfield. Back-to-back infield singles by Brhet Bewley and Kevin Collard then loaded the bases. Troy Conyers then reached on a fielder's choice, which scored Mercado-Hood, to give USD the 1-0 lead.
USD then scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, to gain some breathing room. The USD runs came on back-to-back run-scoring doubles by Jeff Houghtby and Daniel Gardner, to give the Toreros a 3-0 lead.
The Toreros then scored one run in the sixth, and seventh innings to cap their scoring for the day, while LMU (12-15, 4-4 WCC) spoiled the shutout in the top of the sixth, scoring one run on Austin Miller RBI single to put the game at its final of 5-1.
Offensively for the Toreros, Gardner led the way, as he went 2-for-4 with a double and one RBI. Ryan Kirby also had a good game, as he went 2-for-4, and Conyers went 1-for-3 with a home run and two RBI.
Gary Cornish (4-1) picked up the win on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed one run on six hits, while striking out seven in 5.2 innings of work. Nathan Kuchta picked up his fourth save of the season, as he allowed no runs on one hit in 3.1 innings of work. LMU's Cory Abbott (3-3) was saddled with the loss for the Lions, as he allowed four runs on nine hits in 6.0 innings of work.
The Toreros will return to action on Sunday, as they close out this three-game series with LMU. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Fowler Park.
