Final Stats

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- The University of San Diego baseball team dropped a heartbreaking 7-6 decision to the University of San Francisco Saturday afternoon in a West Coast Conference game at Benedetti Diamond.

With the loss, the Toreros fall to 20-22 overall, move to 7-10 in the WCC and have dropped the series to the Dons. With the win, the Dons improve to 15-26 overall and move to 9-8 in the WCC.

The Toreros got on the scoreboard first, as they scored one run in the top of the first on a Riley Adams solo home run, to take a brief 1-0 lead.

The Dons then answered back in the bottom of the first inning, by scoring three runs on two hits. The USF runs came on a Ross Puskarich 2-run-double, which scored Allen Smoot, who had walked, and Matt Sintro, who had walked, and the final run came on a Dan James run-scoring double to right field, to give the home team a 3-0 lead.

The Dons then took advantage of a USD miscue to score two unearned runs in the bottom of the second inning. The USF runs came on a USD throwing error and a RBI fielder's choice, to give USF a 5-1 lead.

The Dons then went on to score one run in the fourth to take a commanding 6-1 lead.

San Diego didn't fold, as they put on their rally caps in the top of the sixth and managed to score five runs to even up the score. Three consecutive singles by Kevin Collard, Brhet Bewley and Daniel Gardner got things started for USD, as Gardner's single scored Collard for the first run. Two batters later, Jeff Houghtby doubled in the next run, and a Bryson Brigman 2-run single pushed across runs three and four. The final run came on an Adams RBI single, to move the score to 6-all.

The Dons then were able to push across one run in the bottom of the eighth to steal away the win from the Toreros.

Offensively for the Toreros, Adams led the way, as he went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI. Gardner also had a great day, as he went 3-for-4 with one RBI, while Collard went 3-for-5 with one double.

Nick Sprengel (2-7) was saddled with the loss on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed one run, on three five hits in 3.0 innings of work. Meyer (2-1) picked up the win for the Dons, as he allowed no runs on one hit in 2.1 innings of work.

The Toreros will return to action on Sunday, as they close out this three-game series with the DONs. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Benedetti Diamond.
