FULLERTON, Calif. â€" The University of San Diego baseball team dropped a 4-2 decision to Cal State Fullerton Tuesday evening in a non-conference game at Goodwin Field.
The Toreros (16-15) got on the scoreboard first, as in the top of the third inning, USD scored one run on three hits. With two outs, Bryson Brigman got things started with a single up the middle. Hunter Mercado-Hood then singled to right field, which moved Brigman to third. Riley Adams then singled through the right side, which scored Brigman, to give USD a 1-0 lead.
The Titans (17-11) then answered back in the bottom of the third, scoring one run on a Dalton Blaser run-scoring double, which scored Tanner Pinkston, who had walked, moving the score to 1-1.
After Fullerton scored one run in the fourth inning, USD would even up the score in the top of the seventh, scoring one run on a Kevin Collard solo home run. This was Collard's second home run in as many games. But this is as close as USD would get, as CSF went on to score a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to put the game at its final of 4-2.
Offensively for the Toreros, Collard led the way, as he went 2-for-4 with a home run, one double and one RBI. Mercado-Hood also had a good day at the plate, as he went 2-for-4 with a double.
Sean Barry (1-2) was saddled with the loss on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed two runs on two hits in 0.2 innings of work. Fullerton's Blake Workman (1-0) picked up the win for the Titans, as he allowed one run on one hit in 1.1 innings of work.
San Diego will return to action on Thursday, as they resume West Coast Conference play at Brigham Young University. First pitch is set for 5 p.m.
