PROVO, Utah â€" No. 22 Brigham Young University scored 10 unanswered runs to claim a 12-2 win over the University of San Diego baseball team Thursday evening in a West Coast Conference game at Larry Miller Field.
The Toreros (16-16, 4-6 WCC) got on the scoreboard first, as in the top of the third inning, Roman Garcia led off the frame with his first home run of the season, a solo blast to centerfield, to give USD the 1-0 edge.
The Cougars (24-4, 8-2 WCC) then responded in the bottom half of the third, by scoring a pair of runs on three hits. The BYU runs came on a Bronson Larsoub run-scoring double, which scored Nate Favero, who had doubled, and the second run came on a Hayden Nielsen RBI single, to give the home team a 2-1 lead.
The Toreros then evened the score in the top of the fifth inning. Garcia got things started with a single to right field. Garcia then moved to second on a Jeff Houghtby single through the right side, and Daniel Gardner drove in Garcia with an RBI single, moving the score to 2-2.
BYU then went on to score two runs in the sixth and eight more in the seventh inning to put the game at its final of 12-2.
Offensively for the Toreros, Garcia led the way, as he went 2-for-4 with one home run, two runs scored and one RBI. Gardner also had a good day as he went 2-for-5 with one RBI.
Troy Conyers (4-4) was saddled with the loss on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed seven runs on 10 hits in 6.0 innings of work. Michael Rucker (7-0) picked up the win for the Cougars, as he allowed two runs on eight hits in 6.2 innings of work.
The Toreros will return to action on Friday, as they resume this three-game series with the Cougars. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
