PROVO, Utah -- No. 22 Brigham Young University scored 13 unanswered runs to claim a 13-1 win over the University of San Diego baseball team Friday evening in a West Coast Conference game at Larry Miller Field.
The Toreros (16-17, 4-6 WCC) got on the scoreboard first, as in the top of the second inning, USD scored one run on two hits. Riley Adams led off the frame with a single to right field. Kevin Collard then reached on a fielder's choice which saw Adams thrown out at second. Brhet Bewley then grounded out to the pitcher, which moved Collard to second. Roman Garcia then hit an RBI single to centerfield, to score Collard, and give USD a 1-0 lead.
The Cougars (25-4, 9-2 WCC) then responded in the bottom half of the third, by scoring a pair of runs on three hits. The BYU runs came on fielder's choice, and a Colton Shaver RBI single, which scored Hayden Nielsen, who reached on a fielder's choice, to give the home team a 2-1 lead.
BYU then went on to score one run in the fifth, seven runs in the sixth, two runs in the seventh and one more in the eighth inning, to put the game at its final of 13-1.
Offensively for the Toreros, Jeff Houghtby led the way, as he went 2-for-3 with one walk, while Garcia had a good day as well, going 2-for-4 with one RBI.
Gary Cornish (4-2) was saddled with the loss on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed seven runs on seven hits in 5.1 innings of work. Maverik Buffo (6-1) picked up the win for the Cougars, as he allowed one run on seven hits in 6.1 innings of work.
The Toreros will return to action on Saturday, as they conclude this three-game series with the Cougars. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
