Bats Explode, as USD Thumps BYU, 13-7

PROVO, Utah â€"The University of San Diego baseball team exploded for 13 runs en route to claiming a 13-7 win over No. 22 Brigman Young University Saturday afternoon.

With the win, the Toreros improve to 17-17 overall, move to 5-7 in the WCC and avoided a three-game sweep from the Cougars. With the win, BYU improves to 25-5 overall and move to 9-3 in the WCC.

The Toreros got on the scoreboard first for a third consecutive game, as they pushed across three runs on one hit in the top of the third inning. Jeff Houghtby got things started as he drew a lead-off walk. After Houghtby stole second, Bryson Brigman reached first on an error, which allowed Houghtby to move to third. Riley Adams then drew a walk to load the bases, and Roman Garcia doubled, which cleared the bases and gave USD a 3-0 lead.

After BYU managed to score one run in the bottom of the fourth inning, San Diego doubled its runs in the top of the sixth inning, as they scored three runs on two hits. The Torero runs came on Brhet Bewley RBI single, and a Jay Schuyler 2-run single, to give USD a 6-1 lead.

The Cougars then answered back in the bottom of the sixth, by scoring four runs on five hits. The BYU runs came on a wild pitch, a 2-run Eric Urry double, and a Jackson Cluff sacrifice fly, to move the score to 6-5.

USD then exploded to score five runs in the top of the fifth inning to put the game out of reach. With two outs, Hunter Mercado-Hood got things started with a double to centerfield. Riley Adams drove in Mercado-Hood with a RBI single, and Adams moved to second on an error. Garcia then drew a walk, and Bewley drove in Adams with an RBI single. Conner Jauch then did the rest with a three-run homer to give USD a comfortable 11-5 lead.

The Cougars managed to score a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh, and USD would take those right back in the top of the ninth to put the game at its final of 13-7.

Offensively for the Toreros, Garcia led the way, as he went 2-for-3 with three RBI and three runs scored. Adams also had a good day, as he went 2-for-3 with two RBI and four runs scored, Bewley went 3-for-5 with two RBI and one double.

Nathan Kuchta (2-0) picked up the win on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed six runs, four earned, on three hits in 4.1 innings of work. Connor Williams (1-1) was saddled with the loss for the Cougars, as he allowed six runs, two earned, on five hits in 5.0 innings of work.

The Toreros will return to action on Monday, as they return to the friendly confines of Fowler Park to host UNLV. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
