SAN DIEGO, Calif. â€" The No. 18 USD Volleyball team (14-4, 7-1) swept the Portland Pilots 3-0 Saturday afternoon inside the Jenny Craig Pavilion. Jayden Kennedy had a match-high 16 kills to help lift the Toreros to a 25-21, 25-23, 25-19 win.
The Toreros held the Pilots to a .093 hitting percentage and had 54 digs to Portland's 43. Kennedy led the team with 16 kills and Kaity Edwards had nine. Addie Picha and Roxie Wiblin each chipped in seven, Picha also had eight total blocks. Kristen Gengenbacher had a double-double with 34 assists and 13 digs and Lizzy Tardieu had a team-high 17 digs.
The Toreros got off to a sluggish start in the first set and found themselves down 20-13. However, they then reeled off a 10-0 run to take a 23-20 lead on their way to a 25-21 win. The 10-0 run was the longest of the season by the Toreros.
USD jumped out to a 14-8 lead in the second set, but the Pilots hung around and pulled within one point (21-20). USD would hold on though and won the second set 25-23.
Just like the first set, the Pilots built up a lead only to see the Toreros storm back. Portland led 9-5 but then USD went on a 13-4 run and never looked back.
Portland was led by Reghan Pukis' nine kills. Cali Thompson led the Pilots with 25 assists and 11 digs, notching a double-double.
The Toreros are back on the road next week, playing at LMU Thursday at 7:00 p.m. and at Pepperdine Saturday at noon.
