SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The USD baseball team (1-1) fell to the #6/7 Vanderbilt Commodores 8-2 Sunday afternoon. This was a resumption of Friday's game, which was suspended after six innings.
On Sunday, neither team scored a run and combined for just three hits. The Toreros' Sean Barry pitched all three innings, allowing just one hit and striking out four. Vanderbilt's Collin Snider, who entered the game who the bases loaded in the sixth Friday and struck out the side, pitched all three innings Sunday to earn the rare four inning save. He struck out seven batters total.
USD starter Jonathan Teaney (0-1) takes the loss after lasting just 2.1 innings, giving up five earned runs and five walks.
Vanderbilt starter Patrick Raby (1-0) pitched five innings of one hit ball with four strikeouts and three walks.
The Toreros only had three hits, but drew five walks and stranded ten runners on base. The Commodores stranded 11.
From Friday...
The Commodores got on the board in the top of the second inning. Ethan Paul led off the inning with a double down the left field line and then Jonathan Teaney walked the next two batters to load the bases. After a fielder's choice, Vandy got a run on a single down the left field line that was just out of the reach of shortstop Jeff Houghtby. The Commodores scored one more on a sacrifice fly to left and then got out of the inning after second baseman Brhet Bewley made a fantastic diving catch to his left.
Teaney struggled with his command in the third inning. After getting the leadoff batter out, he walked the next two and then Alonzo Jones doubled down the left field line to plate one. After another walk, Teaney was pulled for freshman Miles Sandum, who entered the game with the bases loaded. Sandum walked his first batter to force home a run. The Commodores would score one more on a Sandum wild pitch to give Vanderbilt a 5-0 lead. Sandam retired the next two batters to get out of the jam.
The first five Commodores reached base in the fifth inning, leading to three runs. Alonzo Jones led off the inning with a single and then Julian Infante hit a home run off the left field foul pole. Vanderbilt then loaded the bases with a walk and a pair of singles; they would score one more run on a Torero error to bring the score to 8-0 Vanderbilt.
The Toreros managed just one hit off Vanderbilt starter Patrick Raby, but were able to get on the scoreboard after he was lifted.
Reliever Chandler Day walked his first batter, Hunter Mercado-Hood, and then hit his next two batters to load the bases. Day's control issues continued when he walked Kevin Collard to bring home the Toreros' first run. Chris McCready then pinch-hit and reached on an error, which cut the score to 8-2 and prompted Day to be removed.
Collin Snider came in with the bases loaded and struck out the next three batters on 12 pitches to end the Torero threat.
