SAN DIEGO, Calif. â€" The USD baseball team (3-2) had their biggest offensive output of the young season to defeat UC Irvine (3-3) 14-6 Saturday morning. The Toreros tallied 16 hits and scored runs in each of the first four innings, including six in the first to improve their record to 3-2.
The Toreros jumped all over the Anteaters' starter Louis Raymond, sending ten batters to the plate and scoring six runs in the first inning. Jeff Houghtby led off the inning with a single up the middle, then Colton Waltner and Riley Adams drew walks to load the bases. Raymond got the next two batters out, but the Toreros had three straight two-out hits. Kevin Collard hit a two-run double to the gap, Brhet Bewley hit a RBI single and then Roman Garcia hit a two-run bomb that sailed over the batter's eye in dead center field, which ended Raymond's day and gave USD a 6-0 lead.
CJ Burdick struggled with his command in the second inning, hitting the leadoff batter and walking three batters to give UCI their first run.
The Toreros scored two more in the bottom of the second. Colton Waltner led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Riley Adams then hit a bloop single to bring home Walter. Three batters later, Kevin Collard hit a RBI double and Jay Schuyler scored all the way from first, putting USD up 8-1.
The Toreros loaded the bases in the bottom of the third and Riley Adams hit a bases clearing double down the left field line to bring the score to 12-1 USD and giving Adams' four RBI on the day.
The Anteaters scored three unearned runs in the top of the fourth to cut into the Toreros' lead; one on a bases-loaded walk and two more on a two-run single up the middle, which brought the score to 12-4 and ended Burdick's day.
Roman Garcia hit a solo home run off the scoreboard in left center in the fourth inning, his second bomb of the day, and then Hunter Mercado-Hood notched a RBI single in the seventh.
UCI added two more unearned runs in the top of the eighth on a Christian Koss single up the middle, his third and fourth RBI of the day.
The Toreros had a season-high 16 hits with six players having at least two hits. Riley Adams was 3-for-4 with four RBI, Kevin Collard was 2-for-5 with three RBI and Roman Garcia was 2-for-3 with two home runs and three runs scored.
Only one of Burdick's four runs was earned, but he walked four batters in 3.2 innings. Louis Crow (1-0) earned his first win of his collegiate career, pitching 3.1 innings of no hit ball. Paul Richan threw the final two innings, allowing four hits and no earned runs.
The Toreros play their final game of the Tony Gwynn Memorial Classic Saturday evening, hosting Oregon (4-2) at 6:00 p.m.
