SAN DIEGO, Calif. â€" The No. 19 USD baseball team (20-8, 8-2) fell at Gonzaga 9-2 Friday evening. Both teams tallied 13 hits, but the Toreros left 15 on base and couldn't take advantage of forcing Zags' ace Eli Morgan to throw 121 pitches in five innings.
The Toreros jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a Riley Adams RBI double to score Jay Schuyler. Adams finished the game 3-for-5 with two doubles.
The Bulldogs responded in the bottom half of the first with Sam Brown leading off the inning with a triple down the right field line, Daniel Fredrickson then knocked him with an RBI single.
The Zags scored a run in the third and the fourth to go up 3-1. They scored an unearned run in the third and then Nick Brooks hit a solo home run in the fourth.
Gonzaga would add two more in the fifth. One on a suicide squeeze and another on a bases-loaded walk.
Hunter Mercado-Hood tripled to score Jeff Houghtby in the sixth inning, bringing the score to 5-2. The Bulldogs put the game out of reach, scoring four combined runs in the seventh and eighth inning.
Torero ace Nick Sprengel (5-1) suffered his first loss of the season, allowing four earned runs in 4.2 innings pitched. Four pitchers combined to throw the final 3.1 innings, giving up four runs.
