SAN DIEGO, Calif. â€" The No. 17 USD Volleyball team (3-1) had an emphatic start to their 2017 home season, sweeping Georgia Tech 3-0 Friday afternoon inside the Jenny Craig Pavilion. After losing the season opener to a very tough UCLA squad, the Toreros have swept their past three opponents.
Three Toreros notched double-digit kills as they cruised to a 25-13, 25-12, 25-20 win. Lauren Fuller led the way with a season-high 14 kills and Jayden Kennedy and Kaity Edwards each had 10 with Edwards hitting for an impressive .714 clip. Kristen Gengenbacher paced the offense with 34 assists and Lizzy Tardieu led the team with 14 digs.
The Toreros had a season-high kill percentage of .413 and held the Yellow Jackets to a .144 clip. Defensively, the Toreros had 37 digs to GT's 27 and out-blocked them 10-5. Kennedy, Fuller, Edwards and Addie Picha all had four block assists.
The Toreros got off to a fast starts in both of the first two sets, taking an 11-1 lead in the first and an 11-2 advantage in the second. The third set was the most-tightly contested as the Yellow Jackets pulled within three points twice, at 14-11 and 23-20, but the Toreros held off their rallies to win their ninth straight set.
Ashley Askin led Georgia Tech with eight kills. Nicole Alford (14) and Gabby Benda (13) each had double-digit assists.
The Toreros have a doubleheader on Saturday. They begin the day by hosting Villanova (3-1), who was swept by No. 4 Texas Friday morning, at 10:00 a.m. USD will then battle No. 4 Texas at 7:30 p.m.
