Toreros Fall to No. 12 USC

Sept. 17, 2017

Final Stats

SAN DIEGO â€" Summer Mason scored 18 seconds into the game but San Diego was unable to keep the momentum going, falling 3-1 to No. 12 USC on Sunday afternoon at Torero Stadium.

The Toreros (1-7) got off to a quick start when Kelsi Dantu slipped a pass to Mason just inside the 18-yard box on the left side of the field. Mason took a touch then fired a perfectly placed shot to the right corner of the goal to give USD an early 1-0 lead.

The goal was two seconds shy of the Torero record for the quickest goal scored. Mariah Hobbs scored in 16 seconds against Gonzaga on Oct. 19, 2007.

The goal ignited an impressive opening 15 minutes for the Toreros, which controlled the pace of play up and down the field.

The Trojans (6-1) found their rhythm quickly, however, and leveled the score, 1-1, in the 17th minute. USC's Sydney Myers sent a low cross in from the left sideline that Alex Anthony was able to get a touch on in front of the goal and redirect into the net.

The Trojans struck again four minutes later when Savannah DeMelo got the end of a cross by Anthony to put USC up 2-1.

San Diego regrouped well and finished the half strong to keep the deficit at one goal.

USC extended its lead to 3-1 in the second half when DeMelo netted her second goal of the day in the 50th minute. She got behind the defense and had a 1-v-1 with Torero goalkeeper, Amber Michel, and was able to slot a shot under Michel's left hand and into the back of the goal.

Michel played well in goal, making three saves in the second half and coming off her line to snare crosses out of the air and away from Trojans strikers.

USD's backline did well to limit USC's potent attack and keep a majority of the offense out wide. Tara Meier and Courtney Coate were particularly impressive, as they were tasked with handling numerous through-balls by the Trojans.

Mason and Dantu were excellent up top for the Toreros and worked hard to apply pressure to the USC defense.

San Diego will look to get back in the win column next week when it makes a pair of bus rides north to take on Fullerton on Friday at 7:30 p.m. (PT) and CSUN on Sunday at 2 p.m.
