SANTA CLARA, Calif. â€" The 17th ranked USD Volleyball team (9-3, 2-0) completed their Bay Area road trip by sweeping Santa Clara 3-0 Saturday afternoon. Jayden Kennedy (13), Kaity Edwards (12) and Roxie Wiblin (10) all had double-digit kills to help lead the Toreros to a 26-24, 25-19, 25-19 win, their eighth sweep of the season.
The Toreros had a hitting percentage of .308 and held the Broncos to a .243 clip. USD out-blocked Santa Clara 9-7 with Addie Picha totaling eight blocks. Kristen Gengenbacher had her second straight double-double, recording 31 assists and a team-high 10 digs.
USD had their hands full with the Broncos in the first set and found themselves down 22-19 only to rally for the 26-24 win. SCU had a better hitting percentage than USD, hitting .294 while the Toreros hit .270.
The Toreros would hold the Broncos to a .176 hitting percentage in the second set, but once again had to rally to win the set. After being down 11-6, they went on a 6-1 run to tie the set at 12-12 on their way to winning the set 25-19. USD had an impressive .467 hitting percentage in the third set to complete the sweep.
The Broncos were led by Michelle Gajdka's 13 kills; she also led the team with 11 digs. Jensen Cunningham chipped in 10 kills. Kirsten Mead had a team-high 41 assists.
The Toreros return to the JCP Tuesday evening when they host LMU for a 6:00 p.m. match that will be aired live on ESPNU and streamed on the Watch ESPN app.
