Not the Toreros Night

San Diego falls at San Diego State, 3-0

SAN DIEGO – San Diego started slow and could not regroup as the Toreros were swept, 3-0, by San Diego State on Tuesday night at Peterson Gym.

The loss snapped USD's (7-8) five-match winning streak against the Aztecs (3-14) and is the first defeat against SDSU since Nov. 14, 2012. It is the first time the Toreros have been swept by an unranked opponent since a, 3-0, decision against Loyola Marymount on Nov. 24, 2015, and USD had not been swept by SDSU since Aug. 31, 1996.

The Toreros were held to their second-lowest hitting percentage of the season (.125) and could not slow down an Aztecs offense that registered its best performance of the season (.410).

SDSU's Ashlynn Dunbar and Hannah Turnlund caused the most issues for the Toreros, racking up 11 and 10 kills, respectively. The Toreros managed just 19 digs in the match, including one in the first set.

Roxie Wiblin and Megan Jacobsen led the Toreros offensively with eight kills apiece. Wiblin hit .438 on the night and Jacobsen hit. 312.

USD had trouble handling the Aztecs serves early as SDSU racked up four aces in the first set. SDSU capitalized on the momentum and took a 12-5 lead early in the match.

The Aztecs led by as many as 10 points three separate times in the first set and won, 25-15. SDSU's offense was clicking and hit .577 in the first.

The Toreros hung around early in the second set, but a 7-2 run by the Aztecs put them up, 17-10. Trailing 23-14, USD went on a 5-1 run to cut its deficit to 24-19 but it was too little, too late.

Turnlund delivered the clinching point, 25-19, to put the Aztecs up, 2-0.

The Toreros seemed to find its rhythm early in the third set and jumped out to a 6-4 lead. However, SDSU reeled off a 6-0 run to retake the lead, 10-6.

Back-to-back aces by Addie Picha pulled USD to within one, 13-12, but the Aztecs won five of the next seven points to take an 18-14 advantage.

Facing match point, the Toreros won two straight points to cut their deficit to 24-22 but a kill by Turnlund gave SDSU the deciding point, 25-23.

USD resumes WCC play on Friday at 7 p.m. when it plays host to No. 1 BYU.
