Toreros win 47th consecutive match against Bulldogs

SPOKANE, Wash. – Addie Picha and Roxie Wiblin recorded 10 kills apiece to lead San Diego to its fifth straight sweep with a, 3-0, victory against Gonzaga on Thursday evening.

The Toreros (12-9, 9-2 WCC) came out on the offensive with six players registering four or more kills on the night to seal the victory, 25-22, 25-15, 25-22.

USD extended its winning streak against the Bulldogs (6-15, 3-7 WCC) to 47 matches and have won 18 straight sets against Gonzaga.

Picha led the way with a .562 hitting percentage. Megan Jacobsen racked up eight kills and hit .462 on the night.

Anna Newsome and Laura Madill did well to set the Toreros up for success with 21 and 16 assists, respectively.

Kelli Barry was excellent defensively and recorded a team-high 18 digs.

The first set was a back-and-forth battle and was tied at, 7-7, before the Toreros went on a 6-2 run to take a comfortable lead, 13-9. That advantage would not stand, however, as the Bulldogs tied the match at, 20-20, and again at 21-21.

USD won four of the next five points, capped by a kill by Cami May, to seal the 25-22 first-set decision.

It was all Toreros in the second set. The Toreros went on an 8-2 run in the middle of the set to take a commanding 22-13 lead. USD won three of the final points to lock up the set, 25-15.

Gonzaga took an 11-9 lead in the third set but that was the final lead it would hold during the night. USD won 10 of the next 12 points to take a, 19-13, advantage. The Bulldogs closed the gap to 24-22 but a kill by Jacobsen secured the, 25-22, decision and three-set victory.

The Toreros continue its Pacific Northwest road swing Saturday when it takes on Portland.
