FOWLER PARK â€" The visiting Santa Clara Broncos broke open a close game with six runs in the 8th inning and four more in the 9th to claim tonight's WCC opener by the score of 13-2 at Fowler Park before 505 fans. Game two of the three-game series is slated for 5:00 p.m. tomorrow. Tora Otsuka and Shane McGuire each collected two hits for the Toreros.
Santa Clara scored first in the top of the 1st off of Paul Richan with an RBI double by Andre Nnebe who knocked in leadoff hitter Joe Becht. San Diego jumped ahead with two runs in the bottom of the first off of Bronco starter Steven Wilson. Tora Otsuka, Jay Schuyler and Brhet Bewley opened the game with three straight singles with Otsuka scoring on Bewley's hit. Daniel Gardner's sacrifice fly plated Schuyler.
The Broncos evened the score in the 3rd inning when Austin Reyes would get aboard with a single and eventually score on a double by Jake Brodt. Santa Clara would take a 3-2 lead in the 6th when Brodt would double again down the left field line and knocked in Evan Haberle.
USD starter Paul Richan (1-3) would leave the game in the 8th inning after collecting eight strikeouts and surrendering 10 hits and five runs. Brodt opened the inning with a home run off of Richan and the Broncos would close out the 8th inning scoring 6 runs on four hits. SCU's four runs in the 9th inning would be on just two hits, but Reyes would connect with a 3-run homer off of Louie Crow.
For the game Santa Clara banged out 14 hits off of four Torero pitchers. Brodt had the big game going 3-for-5 with 2 runs and 3 RBIs. Reyes also had a big night going 2-for-4 with 3 runs and 4 RBIs. Penn Murfee (3-0) got the win in relief for the Broncos as he pitched the final five innings, limiting the Toreros to just one hit while striking out six.
