June 5, 2018 SAN DIEGO -- USD junior RHP Paul Richan (Newhall, Calif.) received outstanding news late Monday night when he was selected by the Chicago Cubs with the final pick on the draft's first day -- a second-round compensation pick (78th overall).
Richan, a 6'3", 200 lb. workhorse for the Toreros this past season, totaled 101 strikeouts in 89 2/3 innings of work while only walking 13 batters. With 13 starts he finished with a 4-6 record and 4.62 ERA. Twice he was named the West Coast Conference Rawlings Pitcher of the Week during the season. Following his sophomore campaign he was selected All-WCC honorable mention.
Richan prepped at Hart High School where he was undrafted following his senior season when he posted a 5-2 record with a 1.65 ERA, while also recording one save and 71 strikeouts.
This is the sixth straight year the Toreros have had a player selected in the third round or higher. The group includes catcher Riley Adams (2017, Toronto Blue Jays, 3rd round), shortstop Bryson Brigman (2016, Seattle Mariners, 3rd round), and a trio of first-rounders in shortstop Kyle Holder (2015, Yankees), catcher/first baseman Connor Joe (2014, Pittsburgh Pirates) and third baseman Kris Bryant (2013, Chicago Cubs).
