SAN DIEGO—San Diego used dominant pitching and an electric offense to defeat Wagner, 14-0, on Opening Day of the 2019 campaign.
The Toreros (1-0) collected 16 hits from 11 different players including four freshmen, while the USD pitching staff held the Seahawks (0-1) to a single hit, recording 12 strikeouts on Friday afternoon at Fowler Park.
Chris Murphy got the start for the Toreros, going 5.0 innings, striking out six batters, walking five and allowing only one hit.
The Torero bullpen was dominant in relief of Murphy. The combination of
Jake Miller,
Cade Brown and
Nicola Mislinski retired 11 batters in-a-row down the stretch and combined for six strikeouts to shutout the Seahawks. They were backed by a stellar defensive effort from San Diego, finishing the day error-free.
Freshman
Cody Jefferis made his first start for the Toreros at shortstop and went 3-for-5 including a double and one RBI.
Cal transfer
Ripken Reyes also had a big night, going 2-for-4 with three RBI and a stolen base. Reyes began the flood of USD runs with a 2-RBI triple to center field in the bottom of the second inning.
In addition to Reyes, two other Toreros had multi-RBI nights.
Shane McGuire and
Chris McCready each collected two RBI in the contest.
The Toreros continue their opening homestand against Wagner on Saturday at 1 p.m. PT.
