LAST TIME OUT
• San Diego went 1-4 last week, dropping games to San Diego State (4-2) and Hawaii (5-2) and the weekend series at Saint Mary's, 2-1. The Toreros fell to the Gaels on Friday 20-0 and 6-3 on Saturday before taking the Sunday finale, 8-5.
Â
• The Toreros hit .249 (42-for-169) with 11 doubles, one home run and 14 RBIs. USD posted a .331 slugging percentage and .302 on-base percentage in five games.
Â
•
Jeff Houghtby finished 7-for-19 (.368) with four doubles, two runs and three RBIs. The senior shortstop made all five starts and went 3-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI against SDSU on Tuesday. Houghtby posted a .579 slugging percentage and a .400 on-base percentage on the week.
Â
•Â
Josh Hendrickson turned in a strong performance in relief during Sunday's victory at SMC, pitching 4.2 innings after coming in midway through the third inning. Hendrickson limited the Gaels to two hits, not allowing a walk and striking out three for his fourth win of the season.
Â
• USD and SDSU were locked in a 2-2 tie heading into eighth inning before the Aztecs rallied to plate two runs and take the lead. Hendrickson got the start for USD, pitching three innings and holding the Aztecs to one run on two hits with two strikeouts.
Â
• Trailing 5-1 to Hawaii, it appeared as if USD would mount a comeback when
Adam Kerner hit a leadoff home run in the ninth. The Toreros got a man on with two outs, but a strikeout ended the rally to seal the victory for the Rainbow Warriors. It was a game of missed opportunities for the Toreros, who collected 11 hits in the contest and left nine runners on base.
Â
• It was a tough series opener for the Toreros who were held to three hits and just three baserunners in the 20-0 loss to Saint Mary's. USD used six pitchers in the contest who collectively gave up 20 hits.
Â
• The Toreros held a 2-0 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh inning before the Gaels put up five runs to take the lead and ultimately the game two victory. USD mounted a comeback in the eighth scoring a run and putting two runners on with one out, but the next two Toreros were retired in order to halt the rally.
Â
• San Diego overcame an early deficit to defeat Saint Mary's 8-5 in the series finale. The Toreros trailed 5-2 heading into the fifth inning. With the bases loaded,
Tora Otsuka hit a bases-clearing double to tie the game and USD took the lead one inning later with an RBI double from
Ripken Reyes.
