Men’s Basketball Edged at Cal, 75-70

BERKELEY, CA – After taking a 10-point lead in the second half, California (1-2) fended off a late comeback attempt to defeat the San Diego men's basketball team (2-1) on Monday, 75-70.
 
Senior guard Jase Townsend led the Toreros with 16 points, drilling all three attempts from beyond the arc. Redshirt Senior Joey Calcaterra added 15 points on three triples.
 
Graduate center Terrell Brown-Soares registered a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds, in addition to five blocks.
 
Sophomore guard Bryce Monroe went into double-figures for the first time this season, ending with 10 points, four rebounds, and three assists.
 
San Diego falls to 2-1 on the season, and will host UC Riverside on Wednesday.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Monroe started the scoring with a triple from the top of the key, and Calcaterra hit one of his own on the next possession.
  • Parrish converted on an and-one bucket to put USD up 16-8.
  • Cal used a 12-0 run to take a 23-18 advantage.
  • Led by four points from Townsend, San Diego went on an 8-0 run late in the first half to go back in front, 32-30.
  • A late bucket for Cal knotted the game at 32-32 at halftime.
  • Calcaterra and Marcellus Earlington drilled three-pointers early in the second frame to put USD ahead 43-38, but the Golden Bears answered with a 12-2 run.
  • Cal led by as many as 10 midway through the second half, but Townsend scored four straight points to bring the deficit back to six.
  • Brown-Soares tipped in his own miss with less than a minute left, bringing the deficit to four, but Cal scored the next four to seal the win.
