Box Score SAN DIEGO — San Diego baseball (0-1, 0-0 WCC) jumped out to a 2-0 lead early on in their season opener against crosstown rival San Diego State (1-0, 0-0 MWC), but could not contain the Aztecs' offense, suffering a 14-7 defeat at Tony Gwynn Stadium on Friday afternoon.
Shane McGuire helped the Toreros get on the board early, blasting a double in the left-center gap in USD's first at-bat of the 2021 season. He scored after
Thomas Luevano reached on an error by the Aztecs' first baseman.
Tora Otsuka, who recorded three hits in Friday afternoon's contest, continued the rally, plating Luevano with a sharp single back up the middle to move the score to 2-0.
Torero starting pitcher
Jake Miller (0-1) set down the Aztecs in order in the bottom of the first, but then ran into trouble, surrendering five earned runs on eight hits in three innings on the mound. SDSU did the majority of their damage against him by way of two singles and a sacrifice fly.
USD was able to answer the Aztecs' early rally with a rally of their own in the top of the fifth. McGuire scored his second run of the day when
Adam Lopez drove him in with a single, one of two hits for the third baseman on Friday afternoon. Then
Cody Jefferis worked his way through a gritty at-bat with the bases loaded and two outs to produce a single up the middle that scored Luevano. Lopez, however, was thrown out at the plate on the same play, ending the inning. In the middle of the fifth, the Toreros trailed by just a run — a 5-4 margin — but they would get no closer.
After Miller departed, six USD pitchers teamed up to complete the game. They combined to allow nine runs on 11 hits and three walks.
Jefferis and transfer
RJ Teijeiro brought the Toreros back to within five in the top of the seventh with a pair of singles, but the Aztecs quickly responded with a rally that brought in two more runs. Jefferis led all Toreros with two RBIs on the day, and tied Otsuka with three hits of his own.
Jake Reed pitched a scoreless eighth for USD, allowing one hit.
San Diego baseball continues their three-game series against San Diego State tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
