Holmgren Earns All-American Honors With Win

Redshirt Junior advances to round of 16 with three-set victory

Orlando, Fla - August Holmgren moved on to the Round of 16 at the NCAA Singles Championships with a come from behind 4-6, 7-6(1), 6-2 win over No. 4 Duarte Vale of Florida on Monday at the USTA National Campus. 

"Extremely proud of August for staying mentally tough throughout that match.", said head coach Ryan Keckley. "Incredible effort taking down a top 5 player in the country." 

After dropping the first set, Holmgren battled Vale into a thrilling tiebreaker in the second set and won the tiebreak 7-1. In the final set, Holmgren was in control from the start and never let his foot off the gas as he earned his way into the last 16. 

"He did an exceptional job of clawing back in the 2nd set after being down a set and a break. He served very well and played to his identity throughout the entire three-hour affair. If anyone deserves it, it's August for his daily commitment and love of this game!

Holmgren earned 2021 ITA All-American honors with the thrilling win, just the sixth player in program history to earn the honor, and became the first Torero since 2016 to advance to the singles round of 16.
