SAN FRANCISCO, CA – Highlighted by an
Iiro Vasa win over the No. 15 singles player in the country, the University of San Diego men's tennis team opened the 2022-23 season at the Battle in the Bay.
The sophomore Vasa earned two wins to open the tournament, including a 6-0, 7-6 margin in the round of 32 over USF before the win over Pepperdine's #15 De Jonge.
Redshirt junior
Marvin Schaber earned a comeback 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Pacific in the round of 32 before falling to Cal's #62 Kikuchi.
USD faced a tall task against TCU's No. 1 doubles team in the country, eventually falling 8-4. The duo defeated USF in an extra match, 6-2.
"The Battle in the Bay is one of the best fall tournaments in the country," said head coach
Ryan Keckley. "I'd venture to say that half of the 32 singles draw will be ranked at the end of the year. The hospitality is incredible and the members do a fantastic job coming out to support while making everyone feel at home!
It was great to get tested in our first collegiate tournament of the fall. All in all, I believe it was a good tournament for us. This fall is really about getting matches and understanding what we need to work towards to get better daily.
I was very impressed with Iiro's level of play. You could tell he worked this summer and improved his game. It is no easy feat coming out of the gates and securing a win over a top-15 player in the country, especially as one as talented as Daniel De Jonge. Bright things are in store for this young man this year."
