Bill McGillis Leaving Role In USD Athletics

SAN DIEGO — University of San Diego Athletics announced that Bill McGillis, Associate Vice President and Executive Director of Athletics, will be leaving USD today for other professional opportunities.

"I want to thank Bill McGillis for his tireless efforts on behalf of USD, as well as his dedicated support of our student-athletes," said USD President James T. Harris, III. "We wish Bill, his wife Margie and their family the very best."

McGillis arrived at USD seven years ago. During that time, four Torero scholar-athletes in the past seven years earned the university's prestigious Alcala Award, graduation success rates have remained strong, and grade-point averages for student athletes from all 17 USD teams hovered above 3.0 in the last semester.  McGillis, a recipient of the 2023 National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) Cushman & Wakefield Athletics Director of the Year Award, has led USD's intercollegiate athletics program since December 2016.

"My wife, Margie, and I decided that now is the right time to step away, hit reset and embark on exciting new opportunities that are ahead," said McGillis. "I have treasured my seven years at the University of San Diego. USD is a special place with a community of amazing students, faculty, staff and alumni. I will be forever grateful to President Harris, our Board of Trustees, university colleagues, our outstanding Athletics administrative team and an incredible group of head and assistant coaches for the opportunity to serve together in supporting our 400+ scholar-athletes. I am especially proud of the extraordinary achievements of our scholar-athletes and coaches."

On the playing field, Torero teams captured 17 West Coast Conference and Pioneer Football League championships and made 23 NCAA championship appearances. USD also constructed and opened the world-class Purcell Family Championship Golf Practice Facility in 2023 and the Lester T. Vesell Championship Courts at the Skip and Cindy Hogan Tennis Center in 2022.

USD's collective group of scholar-athletes were the recipients of the WCC Community Service Award each of the last two years it was presented, and Torero scholar-athletes and coaches have continued to have an immense impact in the San Diego community and beyond.
