BOSTON — The University of San Diego women's rowing team moved up from 26th at the first timing point to finish 17th of 40 crews in the women's club eights Saturday at the Head of the Charles Regatta.

USD went off fifth in the starting order, a spot it earned by placing fifth in the event a year ago to win the program's first Head of the Charles medal in club eights.

Between the first timing point at Riverside Boat Club and the second at Weld Boathouse, the Toreros posted a 5:45.264 split, the 13th fastest in the field, and moved from 26th to 19th. They gained a spot at Cambridge Boat Club and another at the finish to place 17th.

San Diego crossed in 17:51.614, just 0.115 seconds ahead of Boston College's B eight (17:51.729) and 0.204 seconds ahead of Riverside Boat Club's B crew (17:51.818).

"Rowers don't have a lot of opportunities to race, so anytime we can get on the course it is a great opportunity to learn," USD head coach Katie Thurstin said. "While the results weren't what we anticipated, it's always fun to be part of such a vibrant rowing community and race against some of the best programs in the country."

Complete results from the Head of the Charles are available on RegattaCentral.
