CHULA VISTA, Calif. — San Diego women's rowing swept all five races at the San Diego City Championships on Saturday at Otay Lake, claiming first place in every event to win the team title.
"Every boat executed their race plan really well," said head coach Katie Thurstin. "We had great conditions. The team has been working really hard so it was nice to see every crew find success."
Saturday was the first running of the San Diego City Championships since 2011, an event that started in 1984. The trophy – named the Patty Wyatt Cup – is awarded the winning women's varsity eight.
"I would like to thank [UCSD Head Coach] Colin [Truex] for suggesting we bring back the San Diego city championships as a way to celebrate the collegiate rowing community of San Diego," Thurstin said. "Being new on staff I knew nothing of the storied race and started scouring our trophies looking for the cup. Since then, I've hear numerous stories about the event and the fun rivalry that existed between the schools. I look forward to continuing this tradition and having another opportunity for both the men's and women's teams to support each other on the race course."
The Toreros faced fellow San Diego-area programs UC San Diego and San Diego State across five races, taking the top spot in each contest to make a clean sweep of the one-day event.
The first varsity 8+, coxed by Evy Melstrand and stroked by Annabelle Ruinet, led the way with a winning time of 6 minutes, 44.18 seconds, holding off UCSD's 6:58.42. The second varsity 8+, coxed by Hava Appleyard and stroked by Marley Parks, won its event in 6:58.54 against UCSD (7:12.83) and San Diego State (8:05.95).
USD's sweep extended to the fours events as well. The first varsity 4+, coxed by Ayla Pacheco and stroked by Jess Carter, won in 7:44.49, besting UCSD's 8:02.32. The second varsity 4+, coxed by Ella Karanian and stroked by Petra Phillips, claimed first in 8:06.23 ahead of UCSD (8:15.12), and the third varsity 4+, coxed by Nadia Zayas Aguilar and stroked by Cameron Gatlin, closed out the day with another gold in 8:07.21.
The commanding performance across all five events gave San Diego an undefeated day on the water and the City Championship title.
