CHULA VISTA, Calif. — San Diego women's rowing competed in three sessions across two days at the Triton Invitational on Saturday and Sunday, April 25-26, at Otay Lake, racing against some of NCAA Region 5's top teams in Gonzaga, Portland, Saint Mary's, Sacramento State and UC San Diego.
"It was a great opportunity to race against our conference teams and see where we are at this point in the season," first-year head coach Katie Thurstin said. "Many thanks to UCSD for hosting this great event."
The Toreros opened the weekend Saturday morning against Sacramento State, claiming wins in the first varsity eight and first varsity four. San Diego's first varsity eight crossed in 6:39.71 to edge Sacramento State (6:44.30), and the first varsity four won in 7:40.43, ahead of Sacramento State (7:50.92). The second varsity eight finished just behind Sacramento State, posting a 6:55.30 to Sacramento State's 6:55.83. The second varsity four finished second in 7:56.80, with the third varsity four rounding out the session in 8:04.95.
In the Saturday afternoon session against Gonzaga, San Diego's second varsity eight lost to Gonzaga, and the second varsity four took first in 7:56.92 ahead of GU (8:08.67). The first varsity eight won in 6:49.40 against the Zags (6:55.28), and the first varsity four finished second in 7:50.51 behind Gonzaga (7:44.0). The third varsity four finished in 8:14.91.
On Sunday against Portland and Saint Mary's, San Diego posted its strongest session of the weekend. The first varsity eight won in 6:45.39, ahead of Saint Mary's (6:50.89) and Portland (7:03.02). The first varsity four also claimed first in 7:42.18, finishing ahead of Saint Mary's (7:51.63) and Portland (7:56.59). The second varsity eight placed second in 7:03.43, behind Saint Mary's (7:00.40) and ahead of Portland (7:07.24). The second varsity four finished third in 8:04.08, behind Portland (8:02.55) and Saint Mary's (7:57.90), with the third varsity four completing the day in 8:28.82.
"The team raced well and there is a lot of space for us to continue to improve and get faster in the next couple of weeks," said Thurstin.
