(Moraga, CA) - San Diego starter Kyle Collins pitched seven complete innings to allow the Toreros a 7-1 conference victory over St. Mary's Sunday at Louis Guisto Field. San Diego (13-16, 2-7) breaks a four-game WCC losing streak and salvage a game with the Gaels (8-19; 3-3) taking the finale of the three-game weekend set. The Torero offense, led by senior Joey Prast who went 4-for-5, pounded out 17 hits. Collins improved to 1-1 overall and the USD staff ERA dropped below five (4.84).
USD scored in each of the first four innings, with senior Josh Hansen singling home Tom Caple in the first to give San Diego an early 1-0 advantage. An RBI single by Randy Curtis in the second inning and a three-run USD third had the Toreros out in front 5-0.
Pitching with a lead, Collins threw six innings of shutout baseball before the Gaels plated an unearned run off Collins in the seventh. Collins fanned five and scattered eight hits en route to winning for the first time this season. Freshman Nate Boman struck out four in two innings of relief to close out St. Mary's. Boman is the USD staff leader with 40 K's on the year.
