(San Diego, CA) - For the second straight day USD and Cal Poly SLO were tied at six entering the ninth inning, and for the second straight day it was Cal Poly emerging victorious- winning 10-6 Saturday afternoon at USD's Cunningham Stadium. San Diego (0-2) had scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth to even the score before Bret Berglund hit a two-run opposite field homerun to spark Cal Poly SLO (2-0). Jordan Abruzzo, Steve Singleton and Keoni Ruth each had a pair of hits for the Toreros.
USD starter Nate Boman struck out five Mustang batters through three and two thirds innings, but walked six and gave up four first inning runs. Boman was pulled in favor of freshman Matthew Couch (0-1) in the fourth.
Trailing 4-0 early, San Diego responded offensively by putting up three runs in the third inning on RBI's from Abruzzo, Randy Curtis and Matthew Weston.
San Diego continued to rally, evening the score at 4-4 in the bottom of the fifth inning. Ruth doubled down the left field line to lead off the USD fifth and would later score on a single by Abruzzo. A Collegiate Baseball third team preseason All-American, Abruzzo went 2-for-5 Saturday, doubling and driving in two runs.
With the two teams trading two-run innings, the score was even at 6-6 heading into the ninth. Couch recorded two quick outs before Cal Poly exploded for a four-run ninth, highlighted by a two-run opposite field homer by Mustang Bret Berglund.
San Diego will try and salvage a game out of the weekend series Sunday. Game time is scheduled for 1pm.
