LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The University of San Diego men's soccer team unloaded a 4-1 victory over the Loyola Marymount Lions Sunday afternoon at Sullivan Field. The Toreros had three different goal scorers while senior forward Andrew Feld scored twice.
San Diego improves to 10-4-0 overall and a 6-1-0 mark in West Coast Conference play. The Lions fall to 7-7-1 overall and 2-4-1 in the WCC. San Diego still controls first place in the WCC Standings with 18 points while the Saint Mary's Gaels are in second place with 16 points.
"We were extremely good today," said head coach Seamus McFadden. "Extremely technical, holding the ball up, spreading the ball about the field. Our passing was spectacular and we held possession of the ball for large amounts of time." The Toreros played solid defense throughout the first half holding the Lions to just six shots while San Diego tallied 11 shots.
In the 33rd minute, San Diego broke the scoreless tie with a goal from freshman midfielder Dan Delgado. Freshman midfielder James Cohn had possession of the ball on the far right side of the field. Cohn passed into Delgado who beat an LMU defender and drilled the ball into the far post for the 1-0 lead.
Senior forward Andrew Feld would score the next two goals of the match for San Diego. In the 50th minute, freshman forward Patrick Wallen received the ball in USD territory and streaked past LMU down the line where he fired off a pass that landed in the goalkeeper box where Feld tapped it in for the 2-0 lead. Then in the 60th minute, senior defender Ryan Peterman played the ball to Wallen who beat his man again down to the left end line. Wallen sent a pass into Feld who finished with a shot from eight yards out lifting USD to a 3-0 lead.
LMU was awarded a penalty kick in the 61st minute. Junior midfielder Rafael Baca was given the chance and scored cutting USD's lead 3-1.
The Toreros would add one more goal from Patrick Wallen three minutes later. Junior defender Cory Norris gained possession of the ball at the top of the USD penalty box, taking off towards the LMU goal beating three defenders, then playing the ball to Wallen on the left side. Wallen put the ball inside on his right foot taking the shot and bending the ball to the far post for the 4-1 win.
Torero goalkeeper Kelin Briones had four saves on the afternoon giving up only one goal. LMU goalkeeper Jack McCormack tallied three saves giving up four goals. The Toreros finished with 17 shots and eight shots on goal while the Lions had 13 shots and five shots on goal.
San Diego returns home to San Diego to prepare for a single match at San Francisco. USD opened conference with a 1-0 win over the Dons on October 4. The Dons had a bye this weekend and faced Portland and Gonzaga a week ago with a split result defeating Portland and losing to Gonzaga. They are currently in sixth place at 5-7-1 overall and 2-4-1 in the WCC. The Toreros and Dons will face off at 7:00 p.m. from Negoesco Stadium on Friday, October 30 in San Francisco, California.
