SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Behind the best offensive output of the season, the University of San Diego women's soccer team upended Gonzaga University 5-1 in a West Coast Conference match at USD's Torero Stadium Friday evening.
With the win, the Toreros improve to 11-5-2 overall, move to 5-1-0 in the WCC and run their winning streak to four. With the loss, the Zags fall to 8-10-0 overall and 2-4-0 in the WCC.
San Diego scored a pair of goals in the first three minutes to get things going. Sophomore midfielder Elissa Magracia scored her fourth goal of the season, as Stephanie Ochs sent a cross into the goal box, where Magracia was able to tap the ball past the GU goalkeeper to give San Diego the early momentum at the 2:36 mark.
Then just a minute later, Hallie Huston sent a lead pass to Ochs when then slipped behind the defense and had a one-on-one situation with the Bulldogs goalkeeper. And Ochs easily scored to give the Toreros a 2-0 advantage.
At the 20:44 mark, Jackie Zinke got in on the scoring action, as Huston was again in a giving mood, slipping a pass to Zinke, then hit a one-timer and bent the ball into the far post to tally her fourth goal of the season and giving the Toreros a 3-0 advantage.
Just before the end of the first half, the Toreros put the game completely out of reach, as Sierra Ferreira sent a cross to Mariah Hobbs, who the hit a one-timer into the back of the net to score her second goal in as many games and gave San Diego a 4-0 lead heading into the break.
Freshman Erica Peeples capped the scoring for San Diego with her fourth goal of the season in the 72nd minute of action, as she corralled a pass from Addie Cartan, and hit a laser strike into the back of the net to give the Toreros a 5-0 lead.
Gonzaga spoiled the shutout in the 84th minute of action, as off a corner kick the ball batted around a bit in front of the goal, and Emma Dolcetti finally got a foot on it and slipped it past the USD defense to put the match at its final of 5-1.
Courtney Parsons picked up the win in goal for the Toreros as she allowed no goals and recorded one save. Amy Danielson was saddled with the loss for the Zags as she allowed five goals and recorded seven saves.
The Toreros will return to action on Sunday at 1 p.m. as they host Seattle University in the final home game of the season. The Toreros will be honoring its senior class of Hallie Huston, Christine Mock and Natalie Vinti in a pre-game ceremony.
