SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The University of San Diego softball team wrapped up the Gaucho Classic II with a 5-2 win over host UC Santa Barbara on Sunday finishing the tournament 3-2 on the weekend.
The Toreros improve to 8-7 on the season and 2-0 on the road.
San Diego jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead over the Gauchos in the first inning. Kristen Gensler walked and then moved ahead to second base when Dana Prelsnik bunt singled beating out the throw. Two batters later, Celeste Soto walked to load the bases bringing up Megan Walsh who hit a two-RBI single to centerfield scoring Gensler and Prelsnik.
Jessica Tieszen had another stellar outing when she hit a double down the left field line in the sixth inning and then scored on a Kimberlee Shimizu RBI-single to left field lifting the Toreros to a 3-0 lead. The Gauchos would score two unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth inning cutting the Torero lead 3-2. Tieszen would again come up big for the Toreros with Gensler on second base with two outs, she smashed a ball deep for a two-RBI homerun over the left field wall giving the Toreros a 5-2 lead. San Diego's defense came out strong shutting down UCSB winning 5-2.
From the circle, Cassidy Coleman pitched a complete game striking out 13 batters in seven innings of work. Coleman allowed two runs on three hits in the game not allowing a single walk in 26 batters faced.
The Toreros take the week to prepare for the San Diego Classic II which starts on Friday, March 18. San Diego will face Cal State Northridge, Harvard, Ohio, Ohio State, and Wisconsin this coming weekend.
