SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The University of San Diego Baseball team used a huge eight-run fifth inning to pull away from Santa Clara University and eventually claim a 16-6 victory Sunday afternoon in a West Coast Conference game.

With the win, the Toreros improve to 22-27 overall, move to 11-7 in the WCC, complete a three-game sweep over the Broncos and run their winning streak to a season-high seven games. With the loss, the Broncos fall to 17-31 overall and 4-14 in the WCC.

USD would do most of the scoring damage in the fifth inning, as they scored eight runs on five hits. Dillon Checkal led off the frame with a double to right field, and both Kris Bryant and Zack Kometani were each hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs. Corey LeVier then drove in the first two runs as he singled to right field and moved to second on an error by the SCU right fielder, which moved Kometani all the way to third. After a pitching change, Bryan Haar was hit by a pitch to load the bases again, and Scott Schauer singled up the middle to drive in Kometani and LeVier, while also moved Haar to second. After a Jon Hotta single loaded the bases yet again, the Broncos pitching staff would hit their third batter of the inning in Julian Duran to push across the fifth run, and keep the bases loaded with no outs. Zach Sullivan then recorded the first out of the inning on a sacrifice fly to right field, which scored Schauer and a Checkal groundout to the shortstop produced the seventh run of the inning. Bryant then capped the scoring for the inning as he hit a RBI single to left field to give USD a 12-1 lead.

SCU scored its first run of the game on a Stephen Takahashi sacrifice fly in the fourth inning. The remaining five runs were scored on a Brian Roby run scoring double in the seventh inning, a Patrick Terry two-run homer in the eighth inning and they added two more in the ninth inning to out the game at its final of 16-6.

San Diego scored runs in the first, third fifth and sixth innings including a grand slam by Zach Sullivan in the sixth inning.

Offensively for the Toreros, LeVier led the way as he went 4-for-6 with three RBI and three runs scored. Six other Toreros recoded multiple hits on the afternoon in an 18-hit team performance.

Paul Paez (7-4) picked up the win on the mound for the Toreros, as he allowed one run on two hits in 3.1 innings of work. Brock Simon (3-7) was saddled with the loss for the Broncos as he allowed eight runs, six earned, on eight hits in 4.0 innings of work.

The Toreros will return to action on Tuesday as they head up Interstate 5 to take on No. 9 Cal State Fullerton in a 6 p.m. non-conference game at Goodwin Field.
