RENO, Nev. - The University of San Diego softball team split their doubleheader on Saturday afternoon on day two of the Wolfpack Classic I at the University of Nevada's Hixson Park. The Toreros used a nine-run fifth inning to edge Wisconsin 10-9 in game one before losing to Nevada 9-6 in the nightcap.

Catcher Taylor Hensley kept her hot hitting going on Saturday as she went 2-for-3 against Wisconsin, belting a grand slam for her team-leading fifth home run of the season and third in her last six games. Center fielder Dana Prelsnik recorded a career-high four hits against Wisconsin in addition to driving in a run and scoring the game-winning run against the Badgers.

Right fielder Lauren Tomey picked up a total of three hits on the day to go along with four RBI and her second home run of the season. Meanwhile, first baseman Caitlin Rooney had three hits on the day and hit her second long ball of the year as well, while also driving in two runs.

In game one, USD (11-9) fell behind 6-0 after the first four innings against the Badgers. Wisconsin scored two in the top of the first with a sacrifice fly and a bases loaded walk issued by Torero starter Cassidy Coleman. The Badgers (8-7) added to their lead in the top of the third when Mary Massei drove in a run with an RBI single as the first batter to face USD reliever Kaitlin Healy, putting Wisconsin up 3-0.

The Badgers struck for three more runs in the top of the fourth as Maggie Strange brought in a run with a sacrifice bunt, Stephanie Peace scored from third when Strange stole second base, and Michelle Mueller hit an RBI single to give Wisconsin a 6-0 lead.

Wisconsin proceeded to increase their lead to 7-0 on Molly Spence's sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth.

The Toreros erupted in the next half inning starting with Rooney's RBI single to right field that brought in the first USD run. Jessica Tieszen scored when Katie Emerson reached on a fielder's choice. Kylie Ordos then drove in a pair of runs with an infield single to second base, bringing the score to 7-4 in Wisconsin's favor.

USD kept the rally going as Prelsnik picked up another run with an infield single of her own to the shortstop. That's when Hensley stepped up and blasted an opposite field grand slam off Wisconsin reliever Meghan Mcintosh that put the Toreros up 9-7.

The Badgers didn't go down without a fight, however, as they put up two runs in the top of the seventh to tie the game at 9-9. Kendall Grimm and Peace each drew bases loaded walks that plated Badger runs.

Prelsnik's leadoff triple in the bottom of the seventh set the table for the Toreros, who wound up loading the bases after Chloe Kaneko and Hensley were each intentionally walked. With two outs and the bases loaded, Tomey drew a walk from Amanda Najdek, who had returned to the game after making the start, that brought home Prelsnik for the walk-off run.

Jenny Lahitte (5-5) picked up the win for USD by striking out the only batter she faced in relief, while Mcintosh (2-4) took the loss for Wisconsin after going 2.0 innings, allowing three runs (1 ER) on two hits with two strikeouts.

In game two, the Toreros again fell behind early after Nevada (7-19) took a 5-0 lead after the first three innings. The Wolfpack got on the board with a run in the bottom of the first before going on to score four in the bottom of the third thanks to a two-run home run from Lauren Lastrapes and an RBI double from Sara Parsons, who would later score on a two-out fielding error by Kaneko.

USD pulled within one in the top of the fourth when they scored four runs in their half of the inning. Tomey drove in two runs with a double, while Kimberlee Shimizu knocked in another with a double of her own where Mickell Escobar scored and Emerson came around to score after a throwing error by center fielder Parsons.

Nevada came back in the bottom of the fifth with two runs as Megan Fincher homered and Bailey Brewer scored on a throwing error by USD catcher Chelsea Kamai, making the score 7-4, Nevada.

In the top of the sixth, the Toreros inched closer as Tomey and Rooney each belted solo home runs to bring USD within one at 7-6.

That would wind up being all the Torero offense could muster as Nevada went on to score two more runs in the bottom of the sixth before the game was called due to darkness.

Lahitte took the loss this time around after lasting 2.2 innings in the start, allowing five runs (3 ER) on five hits with three strikeouts. Mallary Darby (6-8) earned the win with her 3.1 innings of work where she allowed four runs (2 ER) on six hits with one strikeout.

The Toreros conclude the Wolfpack Classic I on Sunday with a single game against Nevada at 11:00 am.
