RENO, Nev. - The University of San Diego softball team suffered a 7-6 extra-inning loss to Nevada on Sunday in the Wolfpack Classic I from Hixson Park. The Toreros had four players with at least two hits and outhit Nevada 12-7 overall, but it was not enough to pull out the victory as USD lost their third-straight contest to the Wolfpack.
First baseman Caitlin Rooney led the way for the Toreros (11-10) with a 3-for-4 day at the plate that included her third home run of the year and two RBI. Dana Prelsnik and Taylor Hensley each had two hits and an RBI, while Jessica Tieszen went 2-for-4 and Chloe Kaneko and Chelsea Kamai each knocked in a run.
The Toreros got out to an early lead with two runs in the top of the second as Kamai and Prelsnik each picked up RBI singles. USD kept the momentum with another two runs in the top of the third on Rooney's two-run blast to left field, putting the Toreros up 4-0.
USD added two more runs in the top of the fourth when Kaneko doubled to left center, scoring pinch-runner Julianne Kendrick, before Hensley drove in Kaneko with an RBI double that gave the Toreros a 6-0 lead.
Nevada (8-20) erupted in the bottom of the fourth with five runs to pull within one. Bailey Brewer was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to get the Wolfpack on the board. Nevada scored their second run on a wild pitch by Cassidy Coleman. Then Caylin Campbell cleared the bases with a triple to left field, bringing the score to 6-5, USD.
The Wolfpack went on to tie it at 6-6 in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI single down the left field line by Brewer.
With international tie breaker rules in effect in the top of the eighth, the Toreros were put down in order before Nevada scored the walk-off winner on a bunt single by Chelsea Barilli.
Karlyn Jones (2-4) picked up the win for Nevada with 4.1 scoreless innings in relief, allowing two hits and striking out three. Kaitlin Healy (2-1) was tagged with the loss in relief after allowing two runs (1 ER) in 3.2 innings, while giving up four hits and striking out two.
The Toreros return home to the USD Softball Complex where they will face Quinnipiac on Wednesday, Mar. 14th at 6:00 pm.
