March 30, 2012

Box Score

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Behind a dominating complete game pitching effort from junior right-hander Calvin Drummond, the 24th-ranked University of San Diego baseball team cruised its way to a 6-1 West Coast Conference win over the University of San Francisco Friday afternoon.

With the win, the Toreros improve to 22-6 overall, remain perfect in WCC action at 4-0 and they have now run their winning streak to a season-high six games. With the loss, the Dons fall to 13-15 overall and fall to 0-1 in the WCC.

Drummond (6-1) was almost unhittable in the game, as he completely dominated the Dons batters. In all, Drummond allowed just one run, while scattering seven hits, and recording seven strikeouts in his first complete game of the season. His counterpart, Kyle Zimmer (2-2) was saddled with the loss, as he allowed four runs on 10 hits in 7.1 innings of work.

The Dons got on the scoreboard first, as they scored their only run of the game in the bottom of the third inning. The USF run came on a Nik Balog RBI single, which scored Justin Maffee, who had singled, to give the Dons a brief 1-0 lead.

San Diego then answered back in the top of the fourth inning, as they scored one run on a Dillon Haupt solo home run to move the score to 1-1.

The Toreros then took the lead in the top of the seventh inning, as they scored a pair of runs. Bryan Haar got things started with a single, and then stole second. After Connor Joe drew a walk, Julian Duran singled back to the pitcher, which moved Haar to third and Joe to second. Louie Lechich then drove in Haar with a sacrifice fly to centerfield, and both Joe and Duran advanced one base on the throw. Joe then capped the scoring for the inning, as he scored on a wild pitch to give the Toreros a 3-1 edge.

USD would then score one run in the top of the eighth inning on a Haupt run-scoring double, which scored Victor Rasor-Thompson, who was pinch running for Corey LeVier. USD then added in a pair of runs in the top of the ninth on an Andrew Daniel two-run double to put the game at its final of 6-1.

Offensively for the Toreros, Haupt led the way as he went 3-for-5 with a double, a home run and two RBI. Duran (2-for-3), Daniel (2-for-5), and LeVier (2-for-4) were the other three Toreros to record multiple hits on the afternoon.

San Diego will return to action on Saturday morning, as they continue this WCC series with the Dons at 10 a.m. inside of AT&T Park.
