LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The 13th-ranked University of San Diego women's volleyball team's late rally fell short in a 3-1 loss to Texas A&M Friday evening at the USC Classic inside of the Galen Center.
With the 22-25, 22-25, 25-16, 17-25 loss, the Toreros fall to 5-3 overall, while the Aggies improve to 7-1 and have defeated their second straight top-15 team, having upset No. 6 USC on Thursday 3-2.
Alaysia Brown recorded 20 kills to pace the USD offense, while hitting for a .350 attack percentage. The only other Torero in double digit kills was Sandra Lozic, who recorded a double-double with 13 kills and 15 digs. Jianna Bonomi recorded 28 assists to help steer the USD offense to a .220 attack percentage, and Hunter Jennings recorded 12 digs.
In the first set, the Toreros were in control early, as they managed to maintain the lead by just a few points over the first half of the frame. Then with USD leading 9-6, the Aggies went on a 5-0 run to take a 12-9 lead, forcing USD into a timeout. San Diego then grabbed the next point, only to see the Aggies remain in control of the momentum and go on to take a 21-15 lead, to once again force USD into a timeout. A Lozic kill sparked a 4-1 Torero run which forced the Aggies into a timeout. USD then used a 3-1 run to pull to within one at 23-22, but the Aggies grabbed the final two points to capture set one, 25-22.
In the second set, the Aggies raced out to a 9-4 lead, which forced USD into a timeout. Texas A&M remained in front until the score was 17-9, then a Sofia Lavin kill sparked a 9-4 Torero run, which moved the score to 21-18, and forced the Aggies into a timeout. San Diego just could not get over this deficit, as they dropped the second set by the same score as set one, 25-22.
In the third set, the Aggies raced out to a 4-1 lead to grab the early momentum. Then with USD trailing 12-9, a Jennings service ace sparked a 5-0 San Diego run, which forced the Aggies into a timeout. USD then continued its run with four more points to cap a 9-0 run, and force Texas A&M into their final timeout. San Diego never looked back, as they cruised their way to a 25-16 win, forcing a fourth set.
In the final set, it was a back and forth battle right out of the gates. Then with USD trailing 10-8, the Aggies used a 4-1 run to grab a 14-10 lead, forcing the Toreros into a timeout. The two teams then traded points over the next few possessions, and USD just could not get things going, as the Aggies went on to complete the upset win over USD with a 26-17 win.
The Toreros will return to action on Thursday, as they open play in the USD Tournament with a 7:30 p.m showdown with No. 1 Stanford University inside the friendly confines of the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
