SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Behind the most balanced attack of the young season, the 15th-ranked University of San Diego women's volleyball team rolled past Northwestern University in straight sets Saturday evening in the final match of the USD-SDSU Challenge at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
With the 25-17, 25-21, 25-21 win, the Toreros run their winning streak to four matches, as they improve to 5-1 overall. The Wildcats however saw their five-match winning streak come to an end, as they fall to 5-1 overall.
Lisa Kramer led the offense for the Toreros with 10 kills on 15 swings, while hitting for a .467 clip. Both Alaysia Brown and Alexa Banker added in with nine kills apiece, while Sandra Lozic had eight kills and Jayden Kennedy added in seven kills. Jianna Bonomi recorded a double-double with 23 assists and 12 digs, while Lozic had 13 digs. As a team, USD hit .229 for the match.
In the first set, the Wildcats grabbed the early momentum with a 5-3 run right out of the gates. However that was short lived, as an Alexa Banker kill sparked a 7-3 Torero run that was capped on a pair of Hunter Jennings service aces to give USD a 10-8 lead. The Wildcats then kept things close over the next few possessions, until a Banker kill ignited a 4-0 USD run, to give the Toreros a 18-14 lead, forcing Northwestern into a timeout. USD never looked back as they then closed out the frame on a 7-3 run to grab set one 25-17.
In the second set, USD took charge early, as a Kramer kill sparked a 7-3 USD run to open things up. The Wildcats then clawed their way back to within one at 11-10, but USD refused to relinquish the lead and used a 6-3 run to regain the momentum and take a 17-14 lead, forcing the visitors into a timeout. The Wildcats just could not recover from this run, and USD went on to cruise to a 25-21 win.
In the third and final set, it was a back and forth battle for a majority of the frame. Then with USD leading 16-13, a NU attack error sparked a 5-3 Torero run to once again force the visitors into a timeout. USD then allowed the Wildcats to go on a 4-2 run, pulling the visitors to within three at 23-20, forcing the Toreros into a timeout. San Diego then closed out the frame on a 2-1 run to complete the sweep.
San Diego will return to action on Thursday, as they take on No. 11 Florida at the USC Tournament in Los Angeles.
